The Consulate General of Malaysia in Los Angeles, together with the Malaysian Islamic Foundation of North America (MIFNA), held a kenduri on Saturday 28 November 2008 to celebrate Aidil Adha.
The celebration began with the sacrifice of two cows at the break of dawn. The Consul General, together with a few members of the Consulate General and MIFNA, were at hand to witness the sacrifice and to butcher the meat. The meat was later delivered at the residence of the Consul General to be prepared and divided. In the true Malaysian spirit of gotong royong, the Malaysian Muslim community gathered at the residence of the Consul General for preparation, cooking and distribution of the meat.
While the men were busy cutting the meat, and the women preparing ingredients for the main dishes; beef soup and beef curry, the children were equally hard at work playing. The atmosphere was truly celebratory, with Malaysians arriving early to help and bringing dishes to be shared by all.
The Consul General and spouse, Pn Kamsiah Kamaruddin, welcomed more than 200 Malaysians to their residence for the kenduri. Although the weather was cold, the atmosphere was warm with families and friends sharing this blessed event. With the uncertainty in American economy, the Malaysian community here has a lot to be thankful to be able to enjoy the blessed Aidil Adha.
The function was very much appreciated by the Malaysian community as it not only lessens their sadness of not being back in Malaysia with family but also as an avenue for them to get together.
